This is very common in G5. Have them separate the subtraction step from the division process by practicing subtraction with the same numbers first. For example, before doing 456 ÷ 6, practice 45 - 42 = ? independently. Also remind them to regroup (borrow) when needed, just like in regular subtraction problems. Breaking long division into its component parts helps isolate where the real difficulty is.
Remainders are not wrong—they're part of the answer! In Grade 5, remainders should be written as 'R' followed by the number (for example, 25 R 3). In some real-world situations, the remainder is important to interpret. For instance, if 47 cookies are divided among 5 friends, the answer is 9 R 2—each friend gets 9 cookies with 2 left over. Help your child practice both writing remainders and explaining what they mean in word problems.
Your child should be comfortable with single-digit multiplication facts (2s through 9s) and basic one-digit division before tackling this worksheet. If they struggle to answer 'What is 7 × 8?' quickly, or 'How many 3s are in 15?', spend more time on fluency with these foundational facts first. Large number division builds directly on these skills.

The inverse operation check is the most reliable: multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. The result should equal the original dividend. For example, if 372 ÷ 6 = 62, verify by calculating (62 × 6) + 0 = 372. This also helps your child see that multiplication and division are connected, which is a key Grade 5 concept.
