Long division teaches critical mathematical thinking that calculators cannot develop. It helps students understand place value, number relationships, and the decomposition of numbers. These foundational skills are essential for algebra, fractions, and more complex math. Additionally, students need to know when answers are reasonable and be able to verify calculator results—skills that require understanding the long division process.
This is a very common issue. Teach your student to look at the divisor and ask: 'How many digits of the dividend do I need before the divisor can go into them at least once?' For example, with 4,230 ÷ 6, the divisor 6 can go into 4 zero times, so look at 42. The first quotient digit goes above the 2 in 42. Practice this 'finding your starting point' step separately before full problems.
The form depends on context. A remainder (like 'R3') is used when you're counting discrete objects that can't be divided further—for instance, 23 pencils shared among 5 students = 4 R3 (each gets 4, with 3 left over). A fraction (like 4⅗) shows the exact amount each person gets when sharing is possible. A decimal (like 4.6) is used in measurement contexts like money or distance. Help your student match the problem type to the appropriate remainder form.
Have them slow down and write out the multiplication fact separately before writing the product. For subtraction, encourage them to 'check backward'—add the difference back to the subtracted number to verify it equals the number they're subtracting from. Limit practice to 5-6 problems per session rather than 15, focusing on accuracy over speed. Speed will develop naturally once accuracy is automatic.

Teach your student to use the 'check method': multiply the quotient by the divisor, then add any remainder. This should equal the original dividend. For example, if 156 ÷ 12 = 13, check: 13 × 12 = 156 ✓. This self-checking strategy builds independence and helps catch errors immediately rather than after submission.
