Understanding long division teaches students the mathematical reasoning behind division, not just the answer. It helps them recognize patterns, understand place value, and develop number sense. More importantly, on standardized tests and in advanced math, students need to show their work and understand the process. Long division also builds problem-solving skills that transfer to algebra and beyond.
This is very common at Grade 6. Have your student write out the subtraction problem separately below the long division work, so they focus fully on getting that step correct before bringing down the next digit. You might also review regrouping (borrowing) as a standalone skill, since many students who struggle with long division actually need to rebuild subtraction confidence first.
A remainder is appropriate when the answer should be a whole number with something left over (e.g., 'We can make 4 teams with 2 people left over'). Converting to a decimal is better when you need a precise total amount (e.g., 'Each person gets 4.2 pounds of candy'). Fractions are another option and are often preferred in math because they're exact. Context matters—read the problem carefully to decide.
The best way is to multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. This should equal the original dividend. For example, if 456 ÷ 12 = 38, check by calculating 12 × 38 = 456. If your student gets a different number, the division was incorrect. This inverse operation check builds confidence and catches errors.

This takes 30 seconds but dramatically speeds up the divide step—they don't have to guess; they can reference their table. As fluency builds, they'll internalize these facts and won't need the table.
