This is very common at the G8 level. Have them write out just the signs first (+ × - = -) before doing the numerical calculation. Practice with simple examples like (-2) × (-3) = +6 until the pattern becomes automatic.
Teach them to work from the inside out: first solve what's inside the absolute value bars, then apply the absolute value (making it positive), then complete any operations outside the bars. For |-5 + 2|, first get -3, then apply absolute value to get 3.
Use parentheses to show the difference: (-2)³ means (-2) × (-2) × (-2) = -8, while -2³ means -(2 × 2 × 2) = -8. The key is whether the negative sign is inside or outside the parentheses, and remembering even exponents make positive results, odd exponents keep the negative.
Help them identify 'clue words' - 'decrease,' 'below,' 'loss' usually indicate negative numbers, while 'increase,' 'above,' 'gain' indicate positive. Have them write out what each number represents before setting up the calculation, and use number lines for problems involving temperature or elevation.
Both are important at this level. They should understand why two negatives make a positive (using number line or real-world contexts), but also have the rules memorized for quick application in complex problems. Understanding prevents errors, but memorization builds fluency for high school algebra preparation.
