This is very common! Use concrete examples like a large pillow (big but light) versus a small book (small but heavy). Let them hold both objects and feel the difference. Practice with balloons, feathers, rocks, and coins to reinforce that size and weight are different properties.
Teach them to use their finger or a ruler to trace the full length of each object from end to end. Show them that a horizontal pencil and a vertical pencil can still be compared by looking at the total distance from tip to tip, regardless of position.
Use clear containers and water or rice to demonstrate. Fill one container completely and another halfway, asking which holds more liquid. Practice with different sized cups, bowls, and bottles so they can see capacity differences with their own eyes before doing worksheet problems.
Slow them down by asking 'How do you know?' after each answer. Encourage them to point to the specific parts they're comparing and explain their thinking. Make it a game by having them 'prove' their answer by describing what they see in the pictures.
