Multiplication has higher priority than addition in the order of operations, so 2 × 3 is completed first to equal 6, and then 5 + 6 equals 11. Doing the operations left to right would give the wrong answer of 21.
Parentheses always come first, so any operations inside them must be finished before moving to multiplication or division outside the parentheses. This grouping changes which numbers are combined first and can produce a different final result.
Work strictly from left to right because addition and subtraction have the same priority level. The worksheet includes a few simple problems like this so students can practice moving across the expression without skipping ahead.
Use the PEMDAS reminder and scan the entire expression for × or ÷ signs first. On the Mathematical Magic Masters worksheet, circling those signs before starting helps prevent accidentally adding or subtracting too early.
Recalculate the expression a second time while saying each step aloud, or compare the result with a classmate's answer. If the numbers match and every operation followed PEMDAS, the solution is likely correct.
