Exponents represent repeated multiplication, so they must be calculated first to establish the correct values that will then be multiplied or divided in later steps.
Treat the operations like a trail: after parentheses and exponents, move across the expression from left to right, completing whichever of multiplication or division appears first.
Highlight the multiplication and division symbols with a marker first, then ask the student to complete those operations before touching any addition or subtraction signs.
Encourage at least one written step for every operation performed so both the parent and student can trace the climb from the original expression to the final answer.
