Advanced place value practice with multi-digit numbers including millions, expanded form, word form, and decimal basics

Break large numbers into chunks of three digits, separated by commas. Teach them to read each chunk followed by its period name (million, thousand, or nothing for ones). For example, 3,456,789 becomes 'three million, four hundred fifty-six thousand, seven hundred eighty-nine.'
Expanded form shows the value of each digit added together (like 40,000 + 3,000 + 500 + 60 + 7), while expanded notation might use multiplication (4 × 10,000 + 3 × 1,000, etc.). At this level, focus on expanded form first as it more clearly shows place value concepts.
Fourth grade introduces basic decimal concepts as an extension of place value. Students learn that just as places to the left of ones are ten times bigger, places to the right are ten times smaller. Focus on tenths (0.1) and hundredths (0.01) only at this level.
Use the comma as a visual cue. Numbers in hundred thousands have the comma after the hundreds place (like 500,000), while millions have a digit before that first comma (like 5,000,000). Practice with a place value chart that clearly shows the comma placement.
Teach the pattern: ones, tens, hundreds repeats in each period. So it's ones-tens-hundreds, then thousand-ten thousand-hundred thousand, then million-ten million-hundred million. The pattern of 1-10-100 repeats every three places, just with different period names.
