This is very common! Use physical manipulatives like base-ten blocks or play money to show that 4 tens blocks equal 40, not just 4. Emphasize that the digit tells us 'how many' and the position tells us 'how many of what' - 4 in tens place means 4 groups of ten, which equals 40.
Start by having them identify the value of each digit first, then simply add plus signs between each value. For 3,456: the 3 is worth 3,000, the 4 is worth 400, the 5 is worth 50, and the 6 is worth 6. Expanded form is just 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 6.
Teach them to look for the comma in standard form numbers. Everything to the left of the comma gets 'thousand' added to it. For 4,256, read the '4' as 'four thousand,' then read 256 normally as 'two hundred fifty-six.' Together it's 'four thousand, two hundred fifty-six.'
At the easy level, encourage chart use while they're learning. The goal is understanding the concept first. Start with a written chart, then gradually have them draw their own simple charts. Memorization comes naturally with practice, but rushing it can lead to confusion and errors.
Ask them to explain why a digit has a certain value or create their own examples. True understanding shows when they can tell you that 5 in the hundreds place equals 500 because it represents 5 groups of one hundred. If they can only repeat memorized answers without explanation, they need more conceptual practice.
