What's the easiest way to teach expanded form to a 4th grader?
Start by having them identify the value of each digit first, then simply add plus signs between each value. For 3,456: the 3 is worth 3,000, the 4 is worth 400, the 5 is worth 50, and the 6 is worth 6. Expanded form is just 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 6.
My child struggles with word form, especially knowing when to write 'thousand.' Any tips?
Teach them to look for the comma in standard form numbers. Everything to the left of the comma gets 'thousand' added to it. For 4,256, read the '4' as 'four thousand,' then read 256 normally as 'two hundred fifty-six.' Together it's 'four thousand, two hundred fifty-six.'
