Point to a specific clue that mentions both gold coins and jewels. Ask your child to first count only those two items for a part-to-part ratio, then add the total treasure found so far for a part-to-whole ratio. This makes the distinction clear through the story context.
Show two different clues that describe the same treasure pile but use different numbers. Help your child multiply or divide both parts of the first ratio by the same number to match the second ratio, demonstrating they are equivalent.
Students often focus on the second item mentioned first. Remind them to always write the numbers in the exact order the items appear in the clue sentence, such as 'gold to maps' before writing the numbers.
After they solve a missing-value problem, ask them to explain in their own words what the ratio means for the amount of treasure at that spot. If they can retell it using the story, they have grasped the concept.
