Two ratios form a proportion when their cross products are equal. For example, in a puzzle clue with 3:5 and 6:x, multiply 3 times x and 5 times 6; if both products match, the values create a proportion.
Start by writing the two ratios side by side with matching labels, then decide whether to use equivalent fractions or cross-multiplication to find the missing number.
Simplifying first keeps numbers smaller and helps students see the relationship more clearly, which reduces errors when filling in the puzzle answers.
The order shows what is being compared, such as apples to oranges versus oranges to apples. Reversing the order changes the proportion and leads to an incorrect missing value.
Ask them to show the cross-multiplication step or draw a quick picture of the ratio relationship so they practice explaining their thinking, which strengthens understanding.
