Guide them to write the original serving size over the new serving size as one fraction and the original ingredient amount over the unknown amount as the second fraction, then cross-multiply to solve.
Remind them that every ingredient must be multiplied by the exact same scale factor; have them first calculate the single scale factor from the serving change, then apply it uniformly to the entire list.
Show that a ratio compares two quantities (such as 2 cups flour to 1 cup sugar) while a rate compares one quantity to one unit (such as 1.5 cups flour per serving); calculate both from the same recipe to highlight the distinction.
Teach them to reduce both sets of ratios to simplest form or to test if cross-products are equal; practicing this verification step on every problem builds accuracy with proportions.
After finding ingredient rates per serving, compare them to grocery prices per unit to discuss which recipe is more cost-efficient, linking ratios directly to real shopping decisions.
