A scale factor is the constant multiplier that keeps every ingredient pair in the same ratio; students set up a proportion such as original servings over new servings equals original quantity over new quantity, then solve using cross-multiplication.
Convert the scale factor to an improper fraction or decimal, multiply each ingredient quantity by it, and reduce the resulting amounts to lowest terms to maintain exact proportional relationships.
Scaling every ingredient by the same factor preserves the original ratios that determine taste, texture, and chemical reactions; changing one ingredient differently breaks the proportion and alters the final product.
Pick any two ingredients, divide their new quantities, and confirm the result equals the ratio of their original quantities; repeating this for multiple pairs verifies the entire recipe remains proportional.
First scale each recipe separately to a common serving size using its own scale factor, then combine the adjusted quantities while keeping all ingredient ratios consistent within each original recipe.
