Practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s with forward and backward counting patterns

Skip counting by 10s follows a very predictable pattern that only changes the tens digit, making it easier for young minds to grasp. Counting by 2s requires recognizing the even number sequence, which is a more abstract concept for 6-7 year olds who are still developing number sense.
Both are important! At the Grade 1 level, focus first on understanding the pattern using visual aids and manipulatives, then gradually work toward memorization through repetition and games. Understanding prevents confusion when starting from different numbers.
Start by having them recite the forward pattern, then immediately say it backwards like reading a list in reverse. Use a number line they can physically trace backward, and practice with smaller ranges before attempting larger sequences.
This is common and shows good conceptual understanding! Provide a hundreds chart reference for number formation, break writing into smaller chunks (write 3 numbers, then continue), and consider that some children need more time to develop fine motor skills alongside math concepts.

Absolutely! This shows they're thinking through the pattern rather than just memorizing. Encourage this strategy initially, as it builds number sense. With practice, they'll naturally begin to see the patterns and jump directly to the next number without counting in between.
