Regrouping requires holding two concepts simultaneously: understanding place value (tens and ones are separate units) AND understanding that 1 ten equals 10 ones (they're also interchangeable). Many G2 students haven't yet solidified this flexibility. The difficulty isn't the subtraction itself—it's the conceptual leap of breaking apart a ten. Use manipulatives (blocks, bundled straws, or coins) so regrouping becomes something they physically do rather than an abstract rule.
Ask them to explain their work aloud or write out the steps. A child who understands regrouping can tell you 'I borrowed 1 ten to make 10 ones' even if they made an arithmetic error. A child who doesn't understand will struggle to explain why they did it or will say things like 'I moved the number.' If they consistently forget to reduce the tens digit by 1, that's a careless pattern that needs a concrete strategy (like crossing out the tens digit and rewriting it).

However, if your child finds it easier to regroup on every problem, that's developmentally acceptable at this level—it's not wrong, just less efficient. Eventually, they'll recognize the shortcut naturally.
Use the inverse operation: add the answer (difference) to the number being subtracted (subtrahend). For example, if the problem is 50 - 23 = 27, check by solving 23 + 27. If it equals 50, the subtraction is correct. This method teaches your child that addition and subtraction are related and gives them a reliable verification tool independent of re-solving the original problem.

Break the 10 problems into smaller chunks—try doing 2-3 problems with manipulatives, then 2-3 more. Celebrate accuracy over speed. Consider covering up half the page so it feels shorter. Most importantly, ensure they're successful with single regrouping before attempting problems where they might need to regroup multiple times. Hard difficulty doesn't mean they should feel frustrated; it means they're being appropriately challenged.
