Regrouping is the trickiest part of large number subtraction. Start by using concrete manipulatives like base-ten blocks or bundles of straws to show what 'borrowing' actually means—you're breaking apart a ten into 10 ones, or a hundred into 10 tens. Once they see it physically, they'll understand the concept better. Then connect it to writing the numbers, showing how the regrouped amount is recorded in the column above. Practice one type of regrouping at a time (ones only, then ones and tens) before mixing them.
Your student should be able to: (1) fluently subtract two-digit numbers with and without regrouping, (2) understand place value to at least the thousands place, and (3) correctly align numbers in columns. If they struggle with any of these, take a step back and practice two-digit subtraction more thoroughly before moving to larger numbers. The 'Easy' difficulty of this worksheet assumes mastery of these foundational skills.
By Grade 5, the standard algorithm (the regrouping method) is the most efficient and expected approach for large number subtraction. However, students may use count-up or number line strategies for checking their work or developing number sense. Encourage the standard algorithm as the primary method while allowing alternative strategies to verify answers. This is very common, especially with the hundreds or thousands place. Create a simple checklist your student uses before solving: 'Check: Do I need to borrow from the tens place? From the hundreds place? From the thousands place?' Have them mark each check-box as they decide. This metacognitive pause helps them catch the need for regrouping before they skip it. You might also color-code the columns they need to regroup from to make it visually obvious.
True mastery means your student can: (1) explain WHY they regrouped at a certain place, not just HOW, (2) use addition to check their answer, (3) solve similar problems without relying on you for step-by-step guidance, and (4) apply subtraction to word problems involving large numbers. If they can explain their thinking in their own words, they've likely grasped the concept. If they can only follow the steps by rote, spend more time with concrete representations and talking through the reasoning.
