Focus on the minute hand first. Have them practice counting by 5s around the clock (5, 10, 15, 20, etc.) then add individual minutes. Use phrases like 'the minute hand is pointing to the 7, so that's 35 minutes, plus 2 more tick marks makes 37 minutes past the hour.'
Break it into chunks using a timeline approach. If calculating from 2:25 to 4:10, first jump from 2:25 to 3:00 (35 minutes), then from 3:00 to 4:00 (1 hour), then from 4:00 to 4:10 (10 minutes). Add up: 35 + 60 + 10 = 105 minutes or 1 hour 45 minutes.
Focus on understanding concepts first. While knowing that each number represents 5 minutes is helpful, students need to understand why the minute hand moves and how it relates to the hour hand. Memorization without understanding leads to confusion with harder problems.
Teach them to be 'time detectives.' Have them highlight or underline all times mentioned in the problem, circle what they need to find, and cross out extra information that doesn't matter. Breaking down the language barrier helps them focus on the math.
Most third graders master exact minute reading by mid to late in the school year. This worksheet represents advanced practice, so don't worry if your child needs multiple attempts. Consistent practice with real clocks and daily time discussions will build this skill gradually.
