Practice reading analog clocks showing times to the hour and half hour

This is very common in first grade! The hands look similar to young children. Practice identifying hands before reading time - have them trace the short hour hand with their finger and say 'short shows hour' and trace the long minute hand saying 'long shows minutes.' Consistent repetition of this routine helps build the distinction.
Half past is harder because the hour hand moves between numbers. Focus on teaching that 'half past' means the long hand points down to 6, and the hour is the number the short hand already passed. Use real clocks or toy clocks to show how the hour hand gradually moves as minutes pass.
For this worksheet level, focus primarily on analog clock reading and saying times with words like 'three o'clock' and 'half past five.' You can show the digital equivalent (3:00, 5:30) but don't require memorization yet - understanding the analog clock face is the main goal at this stage.
Teach 'clockwise' by having your child trace the path from 12 to 1 to 2 to 3 with their finger, saying 'the way the clock goes.' Practice moving toy clock hands in the correct direction, and point out that both hands always move the same way around the circle.
At this level, only focus on times when the minute hand points to 12 (o'clock) or 6 (half past). If your child asks about other positions, simply say 'we'll learn those times later' and redirect attention to identifying whether the long hand points up to 12 or down to 6.
