Regrouping (also called 'carrying') is the essential bridge between single-digit facts and multi-digit computation. It applies place value understanding to solve real-world problems with larger numbers. Mastering regrouping now prepares students for multiplication, division, and decimals in later grades. It's not just about getting the right answer—it's about understanding how numbers work together.
First, have them re-solve the problem while explaining each step aloud. Often, the error is in alignment or a forgotten regrouped digit rather than a calculation mistake. Check each column separately: does the ones column add correctly? The tens? The hundreds? This pinpoints exactly where the error occurred and helps your student self-correct rather than simply receiving the correction.
Use a place value visual—such as base-10 blocks, bundled straws, or drawings of groups of tens and ones. Show that when you have 13 ones, you can 'trade' 10 of them for 1 ten (and keep 3 ones). This concrete representation makes regrouping logical and necessary rather than arbitrary, helping students see it as a smart organizational system rather than a confusing rule.
This worksheet assumes automaticity with basic single-digit facts (sums to 18). If your student is still counting on their fingers to find 7+6, they're not yet ready for multi-digit regrouping. Have them focus on fact fluency first through games and daily practice, then return to this worksheet when facts become automatic. This prevents frustration and builds confidence.
