Practice vertical addition with 2-digit numbers, including problems with and without regrouping

Lining up by place value ensures that ones are added to ones and tens are added to tens. This is the foundation of our base-ten number system. Without alignment, a child might accidentally add a ones digit to a tens digit, leading to incorrect answers. The vertical format also makes it easier to track regrouping.
Make the carried 1 a visible part of the problem. Have your child circle or color it, or say it aloud: 'I carried 1 ten, so now I have 1 + [tens digit] + [tens digit].' Some children benefit from covering up the ones column after solving it so they focus only on the tens column, reducing distractions.
Your child should be fluent with addition facts within 10 (like 7 + 5 = 12) and understand that 12 means 1 ten and 2 ones. They should also be comfortable with addition facts within 20 and understand place value. If these skills are solid, they are ready for this worksheet.
Understanding is more important than memorization at this stage. A child who understands *why* 17 + 8 requires regrouping (because 7 + 8 = 15, which is more than 10 ones, so you make a new ten) will retain the skill longer and apply it correctly in new situations. Use manipulatives and drawings to build that understanding first.

Speed will come with practice and confidence. Do not rush your child or emphasize speed at this stage. Instead, celebrate accuracy and understanding. As these skills become more automatic through repeated practice, speed will naturally increase over the coming weeks and months.
