Counting fluency develops gradually in second grade. Some students haven't yet internalized the patterns in our number system (like how the teens work differently, or how the tens repeat). Continue practicing daily with small groups of objects, use visual number lines, and celebrate progress at their current level. By end of Grade 2, most students reach 100, so ongoing practice is completely normal.
Yes! Finger counting is developmentally appropriate and helpful for second graders. It's a concrete tool that supports their understanding of quantity. Gradually, as they gain confidence, they'll need it less. The goal is flexibility—they should eventually count without fingers, but using them now is a sign of good mathematical thinking, not a bad habit.
Counting is the ability to recite numbers in order and match each number to an object (rote and rational counting). Backward numbers (like a reversed 3 or 7) are very common in Grade 2 and not a sign of reading or math difficulty—it's a fine motor and spatial awareness issue that resolves with practice. Have them trace large numbers in sand or shaving cream, practice writing numbers in sequence on number lines, and celebrate when they write correctly. For sequencing issues, use a printed number line as a reference tool while they work.
