This is common because second graders are still developing their counting skills. Help them count the total number of parts out loud first, then identify how many parts are shaded. Practice with real objects divided into thirds and fourths to make the difference more concrete.
For second grade, focus primarily on recognition and verbal identification. If your child shows interest in writing fractions, you can introduce it, but the main goal is understanding that fractions represent parts of a whole using visual models.
Use concrete examples like cutting an apple in half versus cutting it in fourths. Show that when you cut something into more pieces (higher denominator), each piece gets smaller. The visual models on this worksheet will help reinforce this concept.
Draw or cut out shapes with obviously unequal parts and equal parts side by side. Ask your child which one would be 'fair' if sharing with friends. This helps them understand why equal parts matter for fractions. Then return to the worksheet's properly divided shapes.
Connect to familiar experiences: halves are like sharing with one friend (2 people total), thirds are like sharing with two friends (3 people total), and fourths are like sharing with three friends (4 people total). The worksheet's visual models will reinforce these concepts.
