Fourth graders often struggle because protractors have two scales (inner and outer), and aligning the vertex precisely takes fine motor control. Help by: (1) using a protractor with a clear center hole or mark, (2) starting with larger angles that are easier to measure accurately, and (3) having your student measure the same angle multiple times to build consistency. Practice with a pencil or pointer to show the vertex location before reading the measurement.
Use a 'clock hand' analogy: the angle between hour and minute hands is the same whether you're looking at a small clock or a large one. The opening between the hands (the angle) doesn't change just because the hands are longer or shorter. Draw several angles with different ray lengths but identical measures to show this visually, and have your student measure them to confirm they're equal.
Teach the angle addition strategy: if a larger angle is made up of two smaller angles, you can add the smaller angles to find the total. Have your student: (1) identify which angles are known and which are unknown, (2) write a simple number sentence (like 30° + ? = 90°), and (3) solve for the missing value. Using color-coding or circling to organize information reduces confusion on complex problems.
Ask your student to explain their reasoning for each answer without looking at the answer choices. They should be able to describe which angles are acute/obtuse/right and why, explain how they aligned the protractor, or describe the relationship between angles in composite figures. If they struggle to explain, they may need more practice with that specific skill before moving forward.
