Negative coordinates can be confusing because students need to move in opposite directions. Practice with a large floor coordinate plane where they physically walk to coordinates, or use online interactive tools that highlight the movement path to each point.
Surface area measures the 'wrapping paper' needed to cover a shape, while volume measures how much 'stuff' fits inside. Have them calculate how much wrapping paper they'd need for a box (surface area) versus how many unit cubes fit inside (volume).
Start with one transformation at a time using graph paper. Begin with translations (slides), then reflections (flips), and finally rotations (turns). Use physical objects like pattern blocks that they can actually move, flip, and rotate on the coordinate plane.
Break down each formula step-by-step and have them write out what each variable represents. For rectangular prisms, ensure they can identify length, width, and height correctly. Use real objects like cereal boxes to make measurements tangible and meaningful.
Start with numerical examples before introducing variables. Show that complementary angles always add to 90° and supplementary angles always add to 180°, regardless of whether they're given as numbers or expressions. Have them set up the equation first, then solve for the variable.
