Use these memory tricks: 'Complementary = Corner' (90°, like the corner of a square), and 'Supplementary = Straight' (180°, like a straight line). You can also have your student draw visual examples—a right angle for complementary and a straight line for supplementary. Practice identifying pairs in everyday objects (corners of rooms, clock angles, etc.).
Break the problem into smaller parts. Have your student identify all the angle relationships visible in the figure, then work with one relationship at a time. Encourage labeling each angle, even the ones they know, to see the complete picture. Starting with angles they can directly measure or that are already labeled often helps unlock the unknown angles.
Vertical angles appear frequently in geometry and are the foundation for understanding more complex angle relationships in future grades. Recognizing that vertical angles are always equal helps students solve problems efficiently without needing to measure. This concept also builds logical reasoning—understanding why angles must be equal based on geometric properties, not just memorizing a rule.
Explain that showing work serves two purposes: it helps you understand their thinking, and it helps them catch mistakes. Create a template they can follow: (1) Write what you know, (2) Write the angle relationship formula or property, (3) Substitute the numbers, (4) Solve for the unknown, (5) Check your answer. Praise them specifically when they show work, even if the answer is incorrect—it demonstrates good mathematical practice.

Angles are everywhere! Look for examples together: the angle formed by clock hands, corners of furniture (90°), roof slopes, ramps, skateboard tricks, and compass directions. When you spot angles in daily life, estimate whether they're acute, right, or obtuse. This makes angles concrete rather than abstract and shows why geometry matters outside the classroom.
