This is very common at this age! Try a hands-on activity with a large empty box and a small heavy book. Let them hold both items and discover that bigger doesn't always mean heavier. Practice with balloons, pillows, rocks, and coins to reinforce this concept.
Not yet! Grade 2 measurement focuses on comparison and non-standard units like paper clips or blocks. Formal measuring tools with inches and centimeters typically come in Grade 3. Keep it simple with visual comparison and counting units.
Capacity is abstract in pictures! Use real containers like cups, bowls, and bottles. Pour water or rice between different sized containers so they can see which holds more. This concrete experience will help them visualize capacity in worksheet images.
Teach them to use their finger or a pencil to 'measure' by moving it along each object while counting. Sometimes objects are very close in length, and it's okay to say they're 'about the same.' Focus on clear differences first, then tackle closer comparisons.
Encourage creativity! If they want to measure with crayons instead of paper clips, that's great for learning. Just make sure they use the same unit consistently for one measurement and understand that different units will give different numbers for the same object.
