The order of operations is a worldwide agreement that ensures everyone calculates the same expression and gets the same answer. For example, 2 + 3 × 4 solved left to right is 20, but using correct order of operations it's 14. Mathematicians need this rule so they can trust each other's work and communicate clearly.

The best way is to have your child solve the problem again using a different method or by asking them to explain their steps out loud. You can also solve it yourself to verify, or use a simple calculator to check their arithmetic (though they should do the thinking about which operation comes first). If answers don't match, ask 'Which operation did you do first?' to identify whether the error was in operation choice or calculation.
