This is very common! ABB patterns are harder because the repeating unit is longer. Use physical objects to build the pattern together, grouping the repeating parts with your hands (circle-square-square, circle-square-square). Practice clapping or tapping the rhythm - one clap for A, two quick claps for BB.
Slow down the process by covering up most of the pattern and only revealing 2-3 elements at a time. Ask 'What do you notice?' before moving to the next part. Make them describe what they see before making any predictions about what comes next.
Ask them to create their own pattern using household items like spoons and forks, or have them extend a pattern backwards (what would come before the first item?). True understanding shows when they can explain why something comes next and create original patterns.
Yes, this is typical for first graders! Number patterns require understanding quantity relationships, which is more abstract. Start with very simple number patterns (1,2,1,2 or 2,4,6) and use objects to represent each number so they can see and touch the pattern.

Not at all! Starting over shows they're developing self-correction skills. First graders often need several attempts to see patterns clearly. Encourage this by saying 'Let's look at this pattern fresh' rather than 'try again' to keep the experience positive.
