This is very common at this grade level. Students are learning that position and value are connected. The best remedy is to always emphasize the name AND the value together: 'The thousands place—that's the group of 1,000.' Repetition and visual place value charts help solidify this connection. Some students benefit from physically grouping objects (like base-10 blocks) to see how many ones equal one ten, how many tens equal one hundred, etc.
Expanded form is a bridge between recognizing place value and using it mathematically. Start by breaking numbers into just two parts (e.g., 4,235 = 4,000 + 235), then gradually add more parts. Use place value charts to align the digit with its value, and always say aloud what you're writing: '4 in the thousands place equals 4,000.' Once they master two-part breakdowns, expand to full expanded form (4,000 + 200 + 30 + 5).
Understanding is far more important than memorization. A child who understands that the thousands place contains groups of 1,000 will remember the name naturally and can apply this knowledge to new numbers. Memorization without understanding leads to confusion and doesn't transfer to higher math. Use real-world contexts (like money or base-10 blocks) to help build conceptual understanding, and the names will follow.
Your child is ready if they can already identify place values in three-digit numbers with confidence and understand that 10 tens equals 100. This worksheet extends that to four and five-digit numbers, so ensure they have solid three-digit fluency first. If they struggle with this worksheet, step back to three-digit place value practice and return to this worksheet after a week or two of review.

Absolutely. Strong place value understanding is essential for multi-digit multiplication and division. When students understand that 40 means 4 tens, they can later decompose numbers strategically to solve problems like 23 × 4 by thinking of it as (20 × 4) + (3 × 4). Mastering place value now creates a strong foundation for computational fluency in grades 5 and beyond.
