Focus on one property at a time. Start with squares (4 equal sides, 4 corners), then rectangles (opposite sides equal, 4 corners), then introduce rhombuses as 'tilted squares.' Use real objects like books for rectangles and square tiles to make it concrete.
Break it down into smaller chunks. For hexagons, count 3 sides, then the next 3. For octagons, count by twos or fours. You can also have them place small stickers or coins on each vertex to make counting more visual and manageable.
Use the concept of 'fair' - a regular shape is 'fair' because all its sides are the same length, like pieces of pizza cut evenly. An irregular shape is 'unfair' because the sides are different lengths, like puzzle pieces that don't match.
Start with tangram puzzles or pattern blocks where they physically combine shapes. Then use tracing paper to outline each individual shape within the composite figure. Ask 'What shapes do you see hiding inside?' to make it feel like a detective game.
