This is very common! Help your child place their hands on opposite sides of the shape. For squares, their hands will be the same distance apart. For rectangles, one direction will be much longer. You can also compare them to familiar objects like windows (rectangles) versus crackers (squares).
Not at all! Many kindergarteners think triangles only 'count' when pointing up like a mountain. Practice rotating triangle cutouts together and explain that triangles can 'stand' on any of their three sides. The key is that they always have exactly three corners and three sides.
Turn it into a movement game! Have your child hop once for each circle they find, clap for each square, stomp for triangles, and march in place for rectangles. This adds physical activity while reinforcing counting and shape recognition.
Encourage them to use a 'pointer finger' strategy where they physically point to and mark each shape as they count it. You can also break the worksheet into smaller sections, having them count one type of shape at a time rather than trying to find and count all shapes at once.
At the kindergarten level, this distinction isn't critical yet. Praise them for recognizing the 'roundness' and gently show them that circles are 'perfectly round like a ball' while ovals are 'stretched circles like an egg.' Focus more on the four main shapes for now.
