Young students often learn shapes in standard orientations first and may not initially recognize that a shape rotated or flipped is still the same shape. This is developmentally normal. Help by showing the same shape in multiple rotations side-by-side and emphasizing that the number of sides and corners stays the same no matter which way it's turned.
2D shapes (flat, like circles and squares) are easier for third graders to understand first, so start there. Once they're confident with 2D shapes, introduce 3D shapes (solid, like cubes and spheres) by explaining they are made from 2D shapes (a cube has square faces). Connecting them this way helps students see the relationship and deepens understanding.
Use manipulatives like paper squares and rectangles, or draw them side-by-side. Measure or count the sides together: 'This square has four sides that are all the same length. This rectangle has four sides, but the top and bottom are longer than the left and right.' Emphasize that a square is a special kind of rectangle where all sides are equal.
Third graders can learn these terms in context, and using correct vocabulary builds strong mathematical language skills. Introduce 'vertices' by saying, 'These are called vertices, or corners,' and 'attributes' by explaining, 'The attributes—or special features—of this triangle are that it has three sides and three corners.' Pairing the formal term with the simpler word helps them learn both.

True mastery means they can: (1) name shapes correctly in various orientations and sizes, (2) describe the key attributes of each shape, and (3) identify shapes in the environment without your prompting. When your student can point out a rectangle in a book or notice a cylinder in a soup can, they've moved beyond worksheet learning to real-world application.
