Practice the 'bigger on bottom' rule - if the bottom number is bigger, we need to borrow. Have them circle these situations before solving, and use manipulatives like base-ten blocks to physically show the regrouping process until it becomes automatic.
Teach the 'chain reaction' method: when you can't borrow from a zero, go to the next place value. Show them how 405 becomes 3-9-15 after borrowing (4 becomes 3, 0 becomes 10 then 9 after lending, 5 becomes 15). Practice with similar examples before the worksheet.
Teach them to identify 'subtraction clue words' like 'difference,' 'how many more,' 'take away,' and 'left over.' Have them underline numbers and circle the question being asked. Practice drawing pictures or diagrams to visualize what's happening in the problem.
At Grade 3 hard level with three-digit regrouping problems, paper-and-pencil work is expected and appropriate. Mental math strategies can be introduced for simpler problems, but complex regrouping requires written organization to track all the steps accurately.
Your child should be comfortable with two-digit subtraction with regrouping, understand place value through hundreds, and know basic subtraction facts within 20 fluently. If they struggle with these prerequisites, review simpler problems before attempting this worksheet.
