Subtracting across ten requires students to hold multiple concepts in mind simultaneously: understanding teen numbers as composed of tens and ones, recognizing when regrouping is necessary, and executing the regrouping process. Unlike subtracting 5 - 2, subtracting 12 - 5 requires students to think about 10 + 2 - 5, which demands deeper number sense. Many first graders are still developing the mental flexibility needed to decompose and recompose numbers while also performing subtraction.
True understanding shows up when students can explain their thinking verbally or through drawing. Ask: 'Why did you break apart the ten?' or 'Show me where the ten went.' A student who understands can explain it; a student just following procedures may not. Also, understanding transfers—a student who gets the concept with 13 - 5 should be able to apply similar thinking to 14 - 6 with minimal re-explanation.
At this stage, focus on understanding the strategy. Memorization will naturally follow once the concept is solid and your child has solved these problems multiple times using the regrouping strategy. Rushing to memorization before conceptual understanding often leads to fragile knowledge—students memorize one problem but can't solve a similar one. Strategy first, fluency (including memorization) follows.
Frustration often signals the child needs more concrete support. Step back from the worksheet and use manipulatives for 1-2 more days. Let your child build the problem with blocks or beans first, then solve it on paper. Once success with manipulatives is consistent, reintroduce the worksheet. Also, work through just 2-3 problems per session if 10 feels overwhelming; quality practice matters more than quantity at this stage.
