Watch for the common mistake of students subtracting the larger digit from the smaller digit without regrouping (e.g., solving 12 - 8 as 8 - 2 = 6 instead of correctly getting 4). Consistently verbalize the regrouping process: 'I have 12. That's 1 ten and 2 ones. I need to break my ten into 10 ones so I have 12 ones total. Now I can take away 8.'
