Read the problems together initially, then have your child retell the story in their own words. Focus on identifying what's happening (someone buying, eating, sharing) before worrying about the numbers. Use simpler vocabulary to rephrase complex problems while keeping the same mathematical concept.
Students should be comfortable with multiplication facts up to 5×5 and understand that multiplication means equal groups. Start with problems involving 2-4 groups of items they can easily visualize, like '3 bags with 4 cookies each.' If they struggle, have them use repeated addition first.
Break the problem into smaller parts and use real objects or drawings. If the problem is about apples, use actual snacks or toys. Make it interactive and relate to their experiences. Praise their thinking process, not just correct answers, and take breaks when needed.
Drawing is an excellent strategy for third graders and should be encouraged, even for 'easy' problems. Pictures help develop number sense and problem-solving skills. As they become more confident, they may naturally transition to mental math, but drawings remain a valuable tool for checking their thinking.
Look for signal words together: addition words include 'altogether', 'total', 'sum'; subtraction words include 'left', 'remaining', 'difference'; multiplication words include 'groups of', 'each', 'times'. However, teach them that the story context matters more than signal words alone.
