Break the problem into smaller chunks by having them highlight or underline only the essential numerical information first. Then help them identify the ultimate question being asked. Cover up parts of longer problems initially and reveal information step by step. Encourage them to rewrite the problem in their own words using simpler language.
Focus on helping them recognize fraction problem types: 'part of a group' (multiply), 'how many groups' (divide), and 'combining parts' (add/subtract). Use visual representations like pie charts or rectangle models. Practice translating phrases like 'three-fourths of the students' into mathematical expressions before moving to calculations.
Students should estimate before solving to get a ballpark answer, especially for percentage and decimal problems. For example, 23% of 78 should be close to 20, not 200. Estimation helps catch calculation errors and builds number sense. Teach them to round to friendly numbers first, then check if their final answer is reasonable.
Your child should be comfortable with basic fraction operations, converting between fractions/decimals/percentages, and solving simple one-step word problems independently. They should also be able to identify what operation is needed when you read a word problem aloud. If they struggle with these prerequisites, review simpler word problems first.

Teach them to number their steps and write a brief description of what they're finding in each step (Step 1: Find the discount amount, Step 2: Find the sale price, etc.). Have them use charts or tables for ratio problems and always label their final answer with appropriate units. This organization helps prevent errors and makes checking work easier.
