Guide them to first identify what the question is asking, then list every price and quantity mentioned, and finally decide the order of operations needed to reach the answer.
Ask them to rephrase the problem in their own words, such as 'I need to buy four of the same item' which signals multiplication, versus 'I need the total of two different items' which signals addition.
They may focus only on the first numbers given; practice circling any mention of tax, discount, or 'how much left' to train them to include every detail in the solution.
Most problems at this level need two or three operations, such as multiplying to find a subtotal then subtracting from a budget to find change.
Have them estimate the total first using rounded numbers, then compare their exact answer to the estimate to see if it is reasonable.
