Memorizing number words (rote counting) is different from counting objects (rational counting). Young students must learn to match each spoken number with exactly one object. This skill develops slowly. Help by having them touch each item, use one-to-one correspondence physically, and move counted objects aside so they don't recount them.
Not always. If the error is minor (off by one), ask them to recount with you and point together. If they're significantly off, pause and use fewer objects (count to 5 instead of 10) so success builds confidence. Immediate correction can create anxiety around math. Gentle recounting is more effective.
Your child should be able to: recognize some numerals 1-10, count to 10 by rote (saying the numbers in order), and touch objects while counting without losing track. If they struggle with all three, practice these skills separately before completing the full worksheet.
Yes, zero is abstract and confusing for young learners because it means 'nothing' but is still a number. For now, focus on counting sets with 1-10 objects and introduce zero casually (empty plate, no toys). Deep understanding of zero develops in second grade.
For easy difficulty with 15 problems, expect 10-15 minutes with plenty of breaks. First graders have short attention spans, so it's better to complete 5 problems per day than rush through all 15 at once. Quality counting practice matters more than speed.
