Five-Digit Skills

Regrouping becomes necessary when a digit in the minuend (top number) is smaller than the digit directly below it in the subtrahend (bottom number). In Grade 5, students apply this same concept across five-digit numbers, so regrouping may cascade across multiple place values. For example, if you can't subtract in the tens place, you borrow from the hundreds; if the hundreds place is empty after borrowing, you borrow from the thousands, and so on. This requires stronger place-value understanding than in earlier grades.

This is very common! When students encounter a zero (like in 50,023 - 18,456), they struggle because they must regroup from the next non-zero digit. Teach them to 'look left' when they hit a zero, understanding that a zero in the tens place becomes a 9 after borrowing, and the next digit left decreases by 1. Practice this explicitly with several problems that have zeros, and have them write out each regrouping step in a different color pencil to make the process visible.

Ask your student to explain their work out loud, especially when regrouping occurs. Ask questions like, 'Why did you need to borrow here?' or 'What happened to the thousands place?' If they can explain the reason behind regrouping—not just perform it mechanically—they truly understand. Also, present subtraction problems in different formats (word problems, missing-number equations) to see if they can apply the skill flexibly.

Yes! Estimation is an excellent verification strategy for G5 students. Have them round each five-digit number to the nearest thousand before subtracting, then compare their estimated answer to their calculated answer. If the answers are reasonably close, it's a good sign their work is correct. If there's a large difference, they should recheck their calculation. This builds mathematical reasoning alongside computational skills.
